Making Friends With Ourselves

Friends and Lovers at Dawn

We all get lonely. Babies away from their mom's for only a few minutes start to cry. We get a bit stronger with age, but it's so ingrained that it's easy to fall into a pattern to avoid it. We cure loneliness with sex and in the morning, cure it by going to work to rub shoulders with our colleagues, and after work by drinking with our buddies.

But the best cure is to take it head on, to make a point to leave others behind. First for a few hours, then a few days, then a week at a time, and soon we surprise ourselves how well we can enjoy our own company, and the peaceful silence that surrounds us.

We are free to violate the PC doctrine that only crazy people talk to themselves. Ask yourself a profound question and see where the conversation leads. You can always blame the interesting answers on God.

On the off chance that we discover the Big Guy, it's only with the realization that we are really just discovering ourselves, and he was always tucked away inside, along with a few other surprises.

The best part of taking some alone time to make friends with ourselves is that we become a more valuable friend to others.  Rather a dichotomy that, but no stranger than discovering that others want to stay with us not because we're needy and ask for it, but because we have grown to be such interesting company.
